Table Tennis by Paul Myers
The First round of the Handicap Cup was played in the Aldershot and District Table Tennis League with no real shocks or nail biters as in previous years. Nine matches were played and an even spread from each division have gone through to the second round with three sides from Division Two and two each from One,Three and Four.
Fleet CC C (Div Four) look very well handicapped especially against the higher division sides and they thrashed Frimley A (Div One) 5-1, who understandingly threw in the towel once beaten. Frimley A were allowed to drop only eight points over four games in each set which proved beyond them. John Allan and Roy Chittenden were both unbeaten with Robert Brook winning one for the fleet lads.
The other Division Four side through are Ash J who beat Tennis C (Div Two) 6-3. Tennis C found themselves giving away massive starts in nearly every set and faced a near impossible task. Paul Shakespeare did himself proud for Tennis winning two with Josh Carder in treble form and George Carder grabbing a brace for Ash.
Tennis H (Div Three) stormed past Farnham Cohesion B (Div Four) 8-1 with Eliot Tilley and Paul Jarvis winning maximums and Colin Baggott two. Farnham Cohesion A beat Bourne B in an all Division Three clash with Farnham coming out the victors 6-3. Dean Robertson won a full house and Dong Ming Lau two as they knocked the Division Three League leaders out of the competition.
Farnborough Tennis A (Div One) beat Fleet CC B (Div Three) 5-4 which actually makes the match look close but Tennis had already won 5-1 with the remaining three sets all dead rubbers. Shaun Newbold, Trevor Dodd and George Earle were the winning threesome for Tennis with Marge Massey doubling up for Fleet. Ash A (Div One) also go through to the next round after beating Ash D 6-3 thanks to a Martin Townshend hat-trick and a duo from Tony Amies.
Fleet CC A, Cody B and Tennis B are all through to the next round from Division Two. The most notable performances were Kin Chans treble for Cody B against Ash K (Div Four) and Dave Hewitts three for Tennis B against Ash C (Div One).
