Ash A, in the First Division, secured their first success of the season with an emphatic 9-1 scoreline against Tennis C. Dave Phelps and Dave Halfpenny were both unbeaten whilst Dave Gilham won a couple. Bentley A maintained their winning start with a 7-3 victory over Tennis B. All the Bentley players, Micky Lang, Graham Diplock and Trevor Spraggs won twice as did Tennis’ Paul Shakespeare.
The Second Division is proving to be very tight so Tennis E’s emphatic win over leaders, Cody A, 8-2 might be significant at both ends of the table. Peter Killick led the way for Tennis with a maximum whilst George Carder and Graham McCulley both won twice in support but neither could overcome Cody’s Keith Russell. Cody B and Frimley B shared the points with Cody’s Paul Mission returning a full house. Both David MacKinnon and Pete Good bagged braces for Frimley. Frimley C and Tennis D also shared the spoils with no player losing all three or unbeaten. There were doubles for Frimley’s Hilary Greig and Vasco Correia and Pu Zhang won twice for Tennis. Bentley B eased past Ash C 6-4 with both Robin Street and Paul Farrant clocking up maximums.
In the Fourth Division Ash G won for the first time this season when they beat Cody F, 8-2. Sheila Pretty led the way with a maximum and Janet Guess and Ray Mears each won twice but both lost to Cody’s Norrie Short. Tennis J also had their initial success when they beat Fleet C 6-4. Alan Yeung secured a maximum for Fleet with both Ken Lewington and Keith Johnson winning twice for Tennis. Crawley Ridge C cemented their place at the top of the table with victory over the previously undefeated Braybrooke B, 8-2. Yuiry Schulzhenko was the star of the evening with a maximum with both Richard Hornby and Dave Marchant bagging braces with each losing to Braybrooke’s Sandra Jackson.
In the Third Division Tennis G were denied victory for the first time when they shared the points with Frimley D. Brian Greenberg notched a trio for Frimley with Martin Evans and Mehrdad Abutalebi each winning twice for Tennis. Crawley Ridge A secured a good 7-3 victory over Ash E with Ken Thompson undefeated. Corin Moore supported with a pair and this was matched by Ash’s Terry French. Cody D beat their C team 6-4 with no player unbeaten. John Harvey and Stuart Stone won twice apiece for the C team as did John Sheehy and Nigel Roberts for the D squad. Tennis F eased past Fleet B 6-4 thanks to a Charles Burton full house. Andy Blunden and James Maxwell each won twice for Fleet.
The last remaining Handicap result from the first round was a narrow 6.5 to 5.5 success for Frimley D against Fleet A. Brian Greenberg for Frimley and Lawrence Dack for Fleet were both undefeated with them drawing against each other. With Barry Baxter winning twice it pushed Frimley over the winning line.
