Round two of the Handicap cup in the Aldershot & District Table Tennis league and there were plenty more close encounters to report on, none tighter than Tennis H’s 5-4 win over Crawley Ridge B. Martin Evans and Russell Gibbs went into the decider with Gibbs having a 7 point start over the four 11-up legs only to see Evans claw this lead back and in edging the fourth leg 11-8 he sneaked it 44-43 to put Tennis into the next round.
Ash F did just enough to beat Frimley E 5-4 thanks to three wins from their youngest member, by quite a margin, George Carder. The last leg of the night saw Barry Jones needing to upset the handicap and beat the higher ranking Carder 11-3, a tough task seeing he had lost the first three ends but the Frimley man dug deep and even though he took it 11-8 the damage had been done as Carder was triumphant 41-37.
A great three wins from Sue Low helped Ash G into the next round 5-3 at the expense of Tennis C, a scoreline mirrored by Ash K, Ash D and Ash B. Joining their Ash clubmates in the next round are the E and A teams and making up the draw are Cody B and E, Tennis D and finally Frimley’s A, C and E teams.
Just one game in Division 1 this week saw Ash A beat Broadmoor A 6-4. Setting Ash on their way was an inspired Martin Townshend’s who’s three straight win over previously unbeaten Mark Handcock was the stand out performance.
Graham Marshall and Ian Brown each won all three as Tennis F beat Cody D 7-3 in Division 3 while Tennis G rounded off a busy week for Cody D in beating them 6-4, Stuart Gale’s hat trick did the business for Tennis.
